For many years I had a couple of
arborvitae growing in my front garden. I kept them small, and
more neatly trimmed than this specimen. But there was no root
containment. The roots spread across the yard making hard bumps
in the lawn. When the roots invaded the sewer, I removed the
arborvitae.
A key characteristic of arborvitae,
notice how the twigs are flattened into a sort of fan.
The leaves are very
small, and
completely cover the twigs giving the twigs a flat cross section.
Not all gymnosperms have needle
like leaves.
