Black medic is a very common lawn weed
in Southern California. To keep a lawn free of it is a constant
job. Its main problem is that it is seasonal, it kills the grass
under it, then dies leaving a brown spot.
The leaves have three leaflets, and at
first glance look like clover. The flowers are bright yellow, but
tiny. They are shaped like pea flowers, and grow in a small
spike.
The fruit is a pod coiled and contains
only one seed. As the fruit matures it turns black (The source of
the "black" in black medic.
