The bougainvillea in full bloom, with
its almost vine
like
growth and brilliant color, makes quite a show in the garden.
The brightly colored parts however are
not flower
petals.
They are specialized leaves called bracts. When dry and
brown,
these bracts pile up in messy windrows around the yard.
The bracts are in groups of three.
Each bract has
a
flower attached to it. The flower is the red tube with yellow
petals.
