For a long time I was
puzzled by these very hard seeds which kept turning up in my
yard. I figured out that they were being dropped there by
crows.
But I could not determine where the crows were getting them.
Then one day, not far
from my house, I discovered this tree with fruit on, and under
it. And then I learned that it is a macadamia nut tree.
Introduced from Australia.
The next time it bloomed,
I took pictures of its flowers. They are rather unusual.
Here are the macadamia
fruit hanging on the tree.
When ripe the husk splits
and lets the nut out.
Crows know there is
something good inside, but they don't have hammers. After trying
everything they can to open a nut, they finally abandon it, sometimes
in my yard.
