Prostrate Spurge
Euphorbia supina

Prostrate Spurge, Euphorbia supinaThe prostrate spurge is a common weed which was introduced into California from its native territory in the eastern U.S.  This plant grew in a dried out part of my yard while I was gone on vacation.  As shown, the prostrate spurge forms a  thick mat on the ground.

Prostrate Spurge, Euphorbia supinaThe stems are hairy and have a reddish color.  The leaves have elongated purple spots.  You have to look very close to see the tiny flowers and fruit.
