The prostrate spurge is a common weed
which was introduced
into California from its native territory in the eastern U.S.
This plant grew in a dried out part of my yard while I was gone on
vacation. As shown, the prostrate spurge forms a thick mat
on the ground.
The stems are hairy and have a reddish
color. The
leaves have elongated purple spots. You have to look very close
to see the tiny flowers and fruit.
This picture taken through a
magnifying glass shows flowers
and fruit of the prostrate spurge.
